Eduardo Talbert of Monster Tutorials made a couple videos showcasing how to make a coffin with an animated lid out of insulation foam. The videos include techniques on how to make foam look like realistic wood grain and install lighting and fog effects.
First he made his measurements and began cutting out the different segments of the coffin with Industrial Hot Knife and 4-Foot Bow Cutter.
Next he used the Precision Engraver to add the appearance of separate wood boards.
He used the 3-Inch Hot Knife as well as some metal wire brushes to give each foam piece a realistic wood finish.
Once each piece was detailed he used a heat gun lightly over the surface to finish the texturing.
Next, he used a spray gun to add the base layer of black paint, attached the hinges, and did a dry brush of brown and white to add highlights.
Part 1:
To finish the coffin in his next video, he added a motor to raise and lower the lid as well as a light source and fog machine. The motor and light were hooked up to a motion sensor while the fog machine was set on a timer.
