Daemon World Board
“This was a commission I had given to me with the concept being a daemon world and Slaanesh (one of the chaos gods from Warhammer), so I sketched up a few hills and got to work. I’ve used the Freehand Router a fair bit and I knew it was going to give me the look that I was chasing without much fuss.”
“First, I stacked the foam up into heights tall enough for me to cut and be happy with the line-of-sight blocking potential and scale in general. I carved out a couple of elements that were more like a standard hill/cliff and then did a few funky pieces such as the portal with the staircase and a few floating pieces which were very easy to carve out and stick together thanks to the Freehand Router.”
“A few of the walls are just off-cuts from carving the larger pieces that I liked the look of.”
“I added some expanding foam all over – this was to represent the board or terrain being corrupted or mutating into a more daemonic world. To finish off detailing, I added some Halloween plastic skulls with bits from the chaos vehicle Sprue, chains, and a few cake pillars (which I put LEDS in).”
“Painting was done with a foam-safe water-based enamel spray paint in black as a base coat, then a misting of white to bring it back to a grey/white finish. The portal was a piece of plastic blister pack with acrylic clear silicone on it and a wash of purple and blue, which is then wedged into the foam (I carved out slits to make it fit, it took a bit of test fitting to get right).”
“The infection/corrupted parts were painted by hand with a mix of blue and purple craft paints in a pretty random pattern. A gloss was painted onto the infected areas to bring them back up as I thought that visual might pop more on the tabletop against a grim grey backdrop.”
“To finish the board up, I added a layer of fake snow made of bi-carb soda and PVA mixed up and dusted all over the desired areas. I was SUPER happy with the result, and I couldn’t have gotten it done in the style I wanted without the Freehand Router.”
Desert Board
“A bit more of a simple commission here – some desert rocks with a red theme.”
“After cutting out the rounded shapes on the HWFF Scroll Table, I stacked the foam into hills and glued them together.”
“Carving with the Freehand Router was a breeze, which helped me create some really interesting shapes with nice smooth edges that didn’t need sanding and kept the natural look I wanted for the rocks. After the glue gaps were filled, I got to removing the hairs leftover from the carving – this is done with a stiff brush. By rubbing around the area, they will fall off the pieces with ease.”
“Painting consisted of an undercoat of black again, and a signature mist of white to help break up the dark colour and give me sort of a mid ground between black and white that I can easily colour up to the desired red/brown mix I was after. I used raw umber and orange craft paints to get the mix right with a drybrush of light cream to finish up and then a dusting of weathering powders. I put some texture paint on some of the tops of the rocks to help models with gripping during play and set about painting them.”
“The final step was adding a few tufts around to match the larger scatter and it was all finished and ready for battle!”
