Dawn Treader Dragon Prop

By Doug Young

Doug Young crafted this incredibly detailed prop of a dragon-themed ship figurehead for the world premiere production of “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” out of a large block of EPS foam. The finished prop stands about 8-feet tall.

‍‍

“When I was asked to create an 8-foot-tall figurehead for a production of the “Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, I knew the first thing I needed to do was to purchase a hot wire foam cutter. I then sketched the profile and projected the image on the foam block.”

“After carving away massive chunks of foam with the 4-Foot Bow Cutter, I used knives to finish details. For the teeth, I used dowel rods that were sanded to sharp points.

For the eyes, I used red plastic Christmas ornaments. The entire surface was coated with a 50/50 mixture of glue and water. Once dry, it was painted with a base coat of reddish latex house paint and highlighted with acrylic craft paint.”

“I’m so glad I found Hot Wire Foam Factory! They were so helpful and encouraging. Having the adjustable 4′-Foot Bow saved me HOURS of carving and was so much easier to capture the dragon as I had imagined.”
