Fallout 4 Mirelurk Claw

Bruce Riegel

This foam replica of a mounted mirelurk claw from Fallout 4 was made by Bruce Riegel. It came out nicely detailed and game accurate.

He started by printing a reference image from the game. The claw was scaled up and laid out on 1″ foam, which he glued together in a stack of five.

The basic shape was cut out using the Sculpting Tool. Once roughed out, he used a wire brush and sandpaper to get the shape he wanted. Some of the details were molded from homemade paperclay, including the barnacles.

He painted the bare foam with house paint before sealing with tile-setting compound, a powder mixed 1:1 with water.

After some fine sanding it was ready for painting. A brushed-on base coat was followed with several colors of spray paint for accents, then he broke out the airbrush for the fine details.

Finally, a couple of coats of gloss acrylic sprayed on completed the claw. He prepared an aged-looking mounting board by distressing it with a vinegar solution.
