Kasia Polowska and Kyle Cunniff designed and created this mosaic piece called “The American Gothic Rabbits”, which are 8ft tall and are featured in the sculpture park in Southern Colorado.

“For this piece, we used 2-inch polystyrene foam sheets. We cut them individually and then glued them together to be 4-inches deep. Then we fitted this form with Mesh. Once the mesh adhered to the foam, we covered it in a couple of coats of Exterior Foam Coat, allowing the coats to dry between applications.”

“Finally we glued the glass mosaic to the form using exterior thinset and grouted the mosaic when ready.”

“The sculptures are for the outdoors as they live at over 7,500ft in elevation in the largest alpine valley on the planet with 14,000ft mountains in the background and the Great Sand Dunes National Park near by.”

We’ve also used this technique on other similar sculptures as we are working on a whole series of animals and other forms.
