Outdoor Bear Sculptures
A Black Bear Cut And Carved Out Of Styrofoam
By Tony Eliasen
My projects start with large blocks of Styrofoam from dock suppliers which are carved with a Hot Knife in much the same manner as when I carve wood with a traditional knife. I install the eyes and spray a layer of Exterior Foam Coat on with a drywall sprayer and texture it as it dries. After primer paint, I use stock spray paint in a variety of colors followed by a spray can of clear coat to prevent fading. To prevent overspray, petroleum jelly is applied on the eyes before painting and wiped off when finished. When completed, place the artwork near the road and watch the traffic stop and take pictures. It’s better than Yellowstone Park!
