Health Education Exhibit
By David Michaud of DCM Design
I made this nine foot tall head for a dental exhibit at a kid’s health education center. It needed to be very accurate and carving with foam (white expanded polystyrene) was really the only way I could imagine having enough control and detail at this scale. The finished upper and lower jaw were hard coated and painted before adding them to the mechanical head.
Her name is Dentina, and her eyes follow you around as you move about the room. Several of her teeth are removable, and when you place them on a special nearby tray she tells you about those particular teeth.
I design and build exhibits like this for museums, science centers and similar attractions all over the country – Dentina is by far the largest scale I’ve ever worked in.
