Vertical Leopard Gecko Home

Sharon Dellinger

Sharon crafted this lovely home for her leopard Geckos out of foam and made it pet-safe with All Purpose Foam Coat.

“So your product description does not say it works with spray foam insulation, (Great Stuff). I wanted to tell you that it does. I used a combination of spray foam and polystyrene foam sheets. When you use spray foam, I’ve read that grout does not stick unless you carve off all the shiny finish from the spray foam once it’s dry. Your product does stick, but it sticks really well to the carved parts of the spray foam. Generally, I think you have to carve the foam insulation anyway to get the shape you want.”

(IMPORTANT NOTE: Sharon did not use Hot Wire tools to carve the spray insulation foam. This is important because trying to cut spray foam with heat creates toxic fumes. NEVER use Hot Wire tools to cut spray foam and ALWAYS wear a properly rated respirator when working with it in any capacity.)

“Using a paint brush, I applied a thin layer of Foam Coat. Then, because the Foam Coat soaks into the spray foam a bit, I got a rough finish; but it covers very well. I sanded the finish lightly with metal sanding tools after it dried, then added a second coat that was a little bit thicker and mixed with Boost. I followed with a damp sponge to round out sharp corners/edges and to remove brush marks. Afterwards, I applied ALL Purpose really thick for filling in holes where needed, then I applied a final thin coat.”

From here, Sharon painted the enclosure and sealed it with spar urethane.

“To the last coat of spar urethane I added a bit of micro balloon filler. My husband uses it when building model airplanes to simulate the gritty walking surfaces on real airplane wings that prevent people from slipping.”
