Animated Tombstones

Eduardo Talbert of Monster Tutorials

These creepy, moving tombstones were created by Eduardo Talbert of Monster Tutorials for a Youtube tutorial. One is a dollar store tombstone that he simply reinforced with foam and then painted. The other is one he designed from scratch, based on a tombstone featured in the Nightmare Before Christmas.

First he cut sheets of foam with the 4-Inch Hot Knife to reinforce the dollar store tombstone.

He then started cutting out shapes for the Nightmare Before Christmas tombstone. He used a Dremel to carve out the eyes and engrave the teeth of the skull. (A similar effect can be achieved with our Freehand Router.)

He then used the Precision Engraver to cut out the lettering on the tombstone and add cracks.

He used water and a heat gun to add a stone texture to the foam.

Once texturized, he used an airbrush to paint the tombstones and add shading, then used a sponge brush to add highlights.

To add the creepy motions, he hid motors in the tombstones, which attach to hinges on the wooden base.

The animation adds a layer of uniqueness and creepiness to this Halloween yard display that makes it something truly special. Check out the video here:
