Sea Serpent Puppet

By Austin Thompson of Crosstitch Productions

Austin constructed this menacing 3-piece Sea Serpent as a parade puppet for a production of “We Sail on In Darkness”, an original play by Ruthie Buescher in San Antonio, Texas. It’s constructed out of EPS foam and features an articulated jaw.

‍‍

He started the serpent off with the head. He sculpted the shape with the 4-Foot Bow and Industrial Hot Knife, then sanded it to refine the details.

With the head finished, he moved on to the two body pieces and jaw.

With the parts all sculpted, he started painting. First he gave everything a black base coat, then added highlights and accents.

Once everything was finished, the serpent was ready to make its stage debut.
