T-Rex Bike Shop Sign
Anthony Rukcic
Using pink XPS foam, Anthony made an awesome sign for the Over The Edge bike shop that would grab anyone’s attention. The sign is painted with eye-catching colors and prominently features a T-Rex on a bicycle.
“I’m making a sign out of 2” and 1” pink foam board glued together. The sign will be hung outside (no physical contact with people) in a desert environment.”
Anthony started out by projecting an image of the sign onto a sheet of foam, then tracing it out.
“For the list of tools, I pulled out all the stops: 4-Inch Hot Knife, Sculpting Tool, Engraver, Freehand Router, and the Industrial Hot Knife (even used the Sled guide).”
The main body of the sign was cut out on a 2″ sheet of foam while the T-Rex is cut out on a 1″ sheet that’s glued onto the sign to make it pop out more.
“For mounting, I used 3/4″ dowel rods, 5.5” long, embedded and glued into the foam at about a 45* angle from the center line. The lower eyelets are just “threaded” into the foam, since they’re not load bearing and just support to keep it from swaying in the wind.”
“I decided last minute to add the shop motto. This will be seen as people leave the store”
“I did some practice pieces with Styroplast before coating the sign, wow that stuff is good. Even a very thin application is very durable and paints awesome. I decided to coat the layers (T-Rex and sign body) separately for the sake of when it comes time to paint.”
“All painted front and back. Hung up and looking good.”
“It probably weighs 15 lbs or less, but I still put in some good hanging supports. Thanks again for everything! It was interesting working with Styroplast, it really opens up the doors on making foam stronger and weather resistant. Can’t wait to start something else.”
