Old School Runescape Sign
Hot Wire Foam Factory
Our graphics and marketing guy, Shane, made this decorative sign based off the logo for the MMORPG Old School Runescape. It features a built in speaker which plays the main menu theme song at the press of a button.
“I decided to cut the main shapes for the sign out on one of our foam cutting CNCs, so the first step was to create a vector file of the logo in Illustrator that I could convert into an SVG file. I made the letters in a separate file so I could cut those out on paper as templates that I can trace over the top layer.”
“With the basic shapes cut out, I traced the letters over the top layer and cut them out using a 3-Inch Hot Knife.”
“I then used the Precision Engraver to engrave a design into the backing that’s similar to the Old School Runescape website background.”
“I glued the layers together with Foam Fusion, then rounded off the top layer and parts of the sword hilt with sand paper. Once that was all done, I used the Freehand Router to carve out a channel for the speaker in the back.”
“For the protective coating, I used All Purpose Foam Coat mixed with Bounce in two separate layers. The first layer was 3 parts Bounce to 1 part All Purpose which created a viscus mixture that was easy to spread across the project. The second layer was approximately 1 part Bounce to 1 part All Purpose which created a thicker mixture that was still easy to spread and worked perfectly for the sides of the project.
Once it was all cured, I painted it with acrylic craft paint. The cracks on the backing were painted with a dark brown mixed with black to add depth, then the rest of the backing was painted just with the dark brown. To add depth to the letters, I painted them a flat black then painted the rune stones a mid gray. The hilt is canary yellow mixed with silver and a little bit of black for the grip. I chose to paint the jewel white over the current teal color because it was white on the original logo.”
