Part 3: Making the Lake

To make the lake, Miriam started by gluing foil to the floor of it, then adding a layer of plaster rolls to keep any resin from leaking into the foam.

Once the plaster dried, she painted the lake floor with Lake Blue acrylic paint mixed with either black or white for shading.

After the paint dried, she repeated her stacked stone technique all around the edges of the lake and on other parts of the display.

To seal the stacked stone in the lake from resin, she painted on a layer of matte Mod Podge. While that was drying, she dry brushed highlights of dark grey, light grey, and nutmeg brown onto the other stacked stone walls. Once the Mod Podge was dry, she painted the highlights on the lake stacked stone as well and sealed it with one last layer of Mod Podge after the paint dried.

Before she started pouring the resin, she placed small rocks, crushed gravel, and miniature cattails in the bottom of the lake. Once they were in place, she poured Realistic Water resin in 1/8″ layers until the lake was full.
